What is creativity?

The ability to generate novel ideas by connecting people, experiences, references, and concepts in new ways.

Why it matters

Every campaign, film, brand, and product starts with someone noticing a gap and imagining what could fill it. Without creativity, teams default to what they have already seen. With it, they can recombine familiar material into work that feels inevitable in hindsight and surprising in the moment. Human creativity remains one of our most valuable resources — especially as tools make execution faster and cheaper.

How creative teams use it

Teams protect creativity by making space before production: gathering references, talking through possibilities, and testing half-formed ideas without rushing to a brief. Strong creative cultures treat creativity as something you cultivate through exposure and conversation, not something you summon on demand. Taste and judgment then shape which ideas deserve to move forward.

Creativity vs inspiration

Inspiration is the spark — the moment a reference or observation opens a door. Creativity is the sustained ability to walk through that door and keep generating, connecting, and refining. Inspiration can arrive; creativity is practiced.

In practice, creativity thrives when people have rich material to connect — references, lived experience, and unfinished questions. Starve the inputs and the output thins out. Flood the room with unexamined noise and creativity drowns. The craft is knowing when to open the field and when to start forming something new from what you found.
